Concept of the work
Magnus RINN, Expo Osaka 2025
Magnus RINN is the first piece in Irish designer-maker Joseph Walsh’s series of monumental sculptures for the outdoors, made on behalf of the Government of Ireland and the Making In Cultural Programme for the Ireland Pavilion at Expo Osaka 2025. In both the Gaelic and Japanese languages, the word “rinn” holds meaning that relates to place, circularity and the flow of ideas across cultures. Magnus RINN is a 6-meter tall, site-specific form transitioning from cast bronze to laminated oak, finished in gilded gold. At the Ireland Pavilion, Expo Osaka 2025, Magnus RINN sits within a landscape by Hiroyuki Tsujii and Oliver Schurmann until 13 October.

Joseph Walsh (Cork, Ireland) is a Designer and Maker whose work reflects his passion for expression through material and form. From monumental scale sculptures to one-of-a-kind site-specific commissions, every piece within his body of work reveals an intuitive relationship with making, a sympathetic use of materials – including wood, marble, resin and bronze - and an expressive engagement with form. In 1999, Joseph Walsh established his own workshop and studio in FARTHA, where he remains today.

TSUJII Hiroyuki is third-generation representative of Tsujii Landscape Co., Ltd. Born in 1970. Carrying on the stone masonry techniques of the Anata clan, which have been passed down in Sakamoto at the foot of Mount Hiei, he is involved in a wide range of projects, from the restoration of temple and shrine gardens, townhouse gardens, and cultural property gardens to the Expo Pavilion and overseas landscapes. Rooted in traditional techniques and values, he creates new garden expressions that harmonise with nature, promoting Japan's scenic beauty both domestically and internationally.
