Profile

Born in Tokyo from 1931 to 2024, he first attracted attention in 1952 with the publication of his first collection of poems, “Two Billion Light-years of Solitude. Subsequently, he received the Hagiwara Sakutaro Prize for “Seken Shirazu,” the Ayukawa Nobuo Prize for “Tromso Collage,” the Miyoshi Tatsuji Prize for “On Poetry,” and many other accolades for his poetry collections. He has appeared on NHK in the ETV specials “Just Being There: Shuntaro Tanikawa, Poet, Gazing at Aging,” “When I Was a Child,” and “Words that Sing of Life: Poets Shuntaro Tanikawa and Wakako Satoru,” and in the ETV special “Words that Sing of Life: Shuntaro Tanikawa and SATORU Wakako Satoru,” etc. He has also written lyrics for the NHK National School Music Contest five times, and was awarded the Hoso Bunka Prize in 2024 for his support of Japanese culture through the power of words.

Exhibited as a room in Coco Room “Poet's Room - Shuntaro Tanikawa writes and you write." The poet Shuntaro Tanikawa faced the table in this room and exhibited his poem “At Cocoyadoya” which he created. Room tours will be held during the Art Festival.

 

Cocoroom Tour

Cocoroom building tours are available every day except on regular holidays at 1:30 PM, 3:00 PM, 4:30 PM, and 6:00 PM. Participation is free and no reservations are required.
We will guide you with commentary, from the garden and well to the guest space that is only accessible to overnight guests, and the rooftop. On certain dates (※), you will also be able to enter the "Poet's Room - A room where Tanikawa Shuntaro wrote and you can write too" and "Our Sweet Home" by Morimura Yasumasa (artist) and Sakashita Noriyuki (former day laborer and current student at Kamagasaki University of the Arts).

"Our Sweet Home" & "Poet's Room" can be visited:
April 10th-13th, April 19th, April 20th, July 18th-25th, October 11th-13th

Only "Our Sweet Home" can be visited:
April 26th, April 29th, May 3rd, May 4th, July 26th, October 4th

Only the "Poet's Room" can be visited:
April 27th, May 5th, May 6th, July 27th, October 5th
