[Event Report] Europe's most cutting-edge digital art comes to Osaka
Immersive art exhibition "EUROPEAN DIGITAL ART EXPERIENCE: THE IMMERSIVE IN OSAKA 2025" opens
~ A noteworthy exhibit at an international art festival co-hosted with the EU and linked to the World Expo ~
On Friday, May 2, 2025, the special exhibition "EUROPEAN DIGITAL ART EXPERIENCE: THE IMMERSIVE IN OSAKA 2025," part of the "Study: Osaka Kansai International Art Festival 2025," opened at the art space "CASO" in the Osaka Bay Area. Co-hosted with the European Union (EU), the exhibition will be held for a limited time until Wednesday, May 14, to coincide with EU National Day (May 9).
This exhibition is curated by Stefano FAKE, a visual artist based in Florence, Italy. Around 20 artists from all over Europe have come together around his studio, "THE FAKE FACTORY," to deliver an immersive digital art experience that makes full use of light, sound, and video.
Dynamic video productions using the entire walls and floors, and interactive installations stimulated the senses of visitors. The venue was bustling with visitors, as the art was not just something to watch, but something to "feel" and "enter."
The venue was filled with light and images, creating a fantastical space.
The venue is a fantastical space enveloped in light and video, with experiences unfolding throughout the venue that make visitors feel like they are part of the work.
■360-degree video space: The walls and floors act as screens, and the video changes according to your movements.
■Interactive light effects: the light sways in response to the movements of visitors
■A space that can be enjoyed by both children and adults: Many families were seen here
Visitors have commented, "I never thought European contemporary art could be so experiential," and "The physical experience is better than just a photograph," and posts with the hashtag "ImmersiveArtOsaka" are spreading on social media.
Comment from curator Stefano FAKE
As a curator, Stefano FAKE spoke about the development of immersive art in Europe, both in terms of background and perspectives.
"Immersive art began at music festivals in the late 1990s. Japanese technology has played a major role in its spread," he said, looking back on how the fusion of sound, light, and spatial experiences became popular, especially among young people in Europe.
"Currently, our approach continues to evolve along two axes: recreating classic works and creating entirely digital works by contemporary artists."
In addition, you can experience Japanese artists from an international perspective.
"Artists like TeamLab and Ryoji Ikeda are already well known in Europe. That's why I want to introduce more young Japanese artists of the next generation to Europe," he said. He also expressed his hopes for future expansion, saying, "The barriers of information no longer exist. Now is a time of great opportunity for international exchange."
Finally, as a message to viewers, he emphasized, "Rather than trying to understand the meaning, I want you to 'feel' it first. The personal emotions that arise while immersed in a space are the essence of immersive art." His words, exuding his feelings as an artist and his hopes for the future, left a strong impression on the audience.
Comments from Daisuke Suzuki, General Producer of the Osaka Kansai International Arts Festival
Daisuke Suzuki positions this art festival as "a platform that connects cities, society, and art."
"What can we connect with society through art? This can be through cultural diplomacy, city branding, support for young artists, and the construction of a new axis of international evaluation."
He also mentioned the "Study: Science Art Award," which he co-created with Rohto Pharmaceutical, saying, "We want to present new standards from Japan for fields that have been difficult to evaluate until now, such as media art, bio art, and tech art. We are aiming to create an award that is recognized internationally."
He also touched on the idea of an "EU Prize" in collaboration with the EU, saying, "I want to create a two-way cycle of evaluation, not a one-way one. Rather than seeing the exhibition as a one-time event, it is important to firmly incorporate it into the global art flow."
The exhibition will run until Wednesday, May 14th
