Born in 1971, Matelli studied in New York, Wisconsin and Michigan before working for several years with Jeff Koons. His work seems to suspend gravity and freeze time. The surreal technical perfection of his deformed sculptures and their placement in self-contradictory or surreal compositions accentuates the absurd. His figures are often comically caught in bizarre situations, sleepwalking or run over by pianos.
