Mathilde ter Heijne

Born in 1969, ter Heijne studied at the Maastricht State Academy and the Rijksakademie Amsterdam. Her work includes installations, performances, films and videos. In her work, Thea Heyne questions current and outdated identity and gender roles, addressing stereotypes of femininity and creating the possibility of deconstructing and redefining them. Her approach is both provocative and playful, as in her series of videos in which she uses a doll that looks just like her in violent scenes. Through these mediums, she clearly illustrates gender-specific issues and raises these questions beyond art and aesthetics. ter Heijne is co-founder of the feminist artist group fff and professor at the Kassel Academy of Fine Arts. She is based and lives in Berlin and New York.
