George Segal
USA
Born in 1924, died in 2000. George Segal initially focused on drawing, but in the 1950s he began to explore the possibilities of sculpture. His early works used wood and wire as scaffolding for his figures. In 1961 he began to use strips of fabric saturated with plaster to create direct bodily impressions. His monochromatic sculptures relate directly to real-life objects, from simple chairs to furnished rooms. By abandoning realistic overpainting and using pure monochromatic figures, he emphasizes the choreographic nature of his work, allowing the viewer to project themselves into the scene.
