Due to popular demand, the Semba area exhibition "Re: Human - The New Human Condition" will be extended until Monday, October 13th.
Due to popular demand, we have decided to extend the duration of "Re: Human - The New Human Condition," which is being held at Semba Excel Building.
However, some exhibits will be changed from late August onwards, so don't miss out!
Highlights of "Re: Human ─ The New Human Condition"
The Semba Excel Building, which has been one of the main venues for this art festival since its inception, is an office building completed the year before the Osaka Expo in 1970, and is located in the Honmachi area, which supported Osaka's industry during the period of rapid economic growth. We would like to introduce some of the highlights of this venue.
Shuzo Azuchi Gulliver
Teppei Kaneuji
This venue is hosting an exhibition by next-generation curator Mitsuhiro Kishimoto, with the theme "Re: Human - The New Human Condition."
Shuzo Azuchi Gulliver, a Shiga native who participated in the Kansai-based artist collective The Play and had connections with the avant-garde art movement Fluxus, will reexamine the relationship between the body and existence, and between life and symbols. Also on display is Teppei Kaneuji, who is also exhibiting large-scale public art at the Expo site in Yumeshima, with works spanning the entire floor, including the "Human Pavilion," "Children's Pavilion," and "Abstract Sculpture Pavilion." Other exhibits include an installation by Osaka-born Tomoaki Ishihara that focuses on physicality, and works by Hyogo-born Momoko Yoshida and others.
Furthermore, with a view to connecting with the 1970 World Expo, Osaka-born Satoshi Kawata will exhibit a work inspired by the public art of Taro Okamoto, titled "Taro's Colors and Shapes x Public." Hata Yoshio, Enatsu Masaaki, and Enatsu Yoshihiro's collaborative work, "Miracle Forest EXPO '70 - Generative AI Video Ver. 2 (Video Installation)," is inspired by the 1970 Osaka Expo. Following the previous Osaka Expo, an urban park was built on the vacant lot. This park became the current "Expo Forest," and the future of "Expo Forest" 50 years from now (around 2070), when biodiversity has been restored, is visualized using AI.
On the top floor, Kamagasaki University of the Arts, a community university in the Nishinari area that holds 80 to 100 events and seminars every year that are open to both locals and tourists, hosts special exhibitions and various other events.
We encourage you to visit the Semba Excel Building, which has been extended, and tour all of the other venues of Study: Osaka Kansai International Art Festival 2025, including the Nishinari area, the National Museum of Ethnology in Expo Commemoration Park, Tempozan, and Yumeshima, to experience Osaka from 1970 to the present and into the future through art.
Chapter 5: North, South, East and West, a crossroads of cultures [Semba area]
"Re: Human - The New Human Condition"
What will humanity be like in the future? What will change and what will remain the same? And what should we be like in the future? Amid the rapid evolution of technology, the merits and demerits of globalization, and constantly fluctuating values, this exhibition will reexamine life and society and explore the possibility of a new "humanity." A past that dreamed of the future, and a future that questions the past. In the ocean of time that stretches between the two Osaka Expos, this exhibition will take you on a voyage of quiet yet insightful questions about the true nature of humanity through the video, photography, sculpture, painting, installations, and artistic practices of artists across generations.
