Shuzo Azuchi Gulliver

Japan

Profile

Born 1947 in Shiga Prefecture, based in Tokyo, Japan, he began his artistic activities in 1964 with Happening and other groups, and after participating in the Kansai-based artist collective "The Play" and interacting with Fluxus, he has been active mainly in Europe since the 1990s. He has been presenting performances, sculptures, and drawings that explore the scale and structure of the body, the symbolism of the human biological base (DNA, etc.), and all forms of the human figure. His works consistently question existence and the self, inviting viewers to explore essential questions that transcend all existing frameworks.

Recent solo exhibitions include “Shuzo Azuchi Gulliverʼs Cinematic Illumination” (Museum of Modern Art, New York, 2020) and “Shuzo Azuchi Gulliver EX-SIGN” (Museum of Modern Art, Shiga, 2010). Major group exhibitions include “Yebisu Film Festival - Imagining Time” (Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, 2020), “On a bien accroché” (Maison Grégoire, Belgium, 2018), “Art in the Turbulent Age of 1968” (Chiba City Museum of Art, 2018), “Expanded Cinema. Reconsideration” (Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, 2017).
