Masked artist DONECY creates works that shake the very foundations of “seeing,” deconstructing and re-constructing the boundaries of vision and perception. For the Osaka World Expo, which opens in 2025, he will present Where I Vanish, his first public artwork and his first three-dimensional work. The sculpture is clearly visible in the distance, but the closer one gets, the more one's gaze is captured by the reflection of oneself in the mirror, and the sculpture itself reaches a moment of disappearance. The simple stroke of the form contains the contradiction of “seeing” and invites the viewer to enter the space between presence and absence.
DONECY's works act on the viewer's “unconsciousness,” rather than on his or her point of view. The moment you try to see it, it is already gone.
