Born in 1941, De Andrea has been devoting himself to the nude since the early 1960s. He works with casts of life-like models made of fiberglass or various plastics, and uses acrylic and oil paints, wigs, etc. to enhance realism. The immediate effect of his depictions of nudes and lovers is the illusion of seeing the living body of the other. Like Duane Hanson, De Andrea is interested in the principle of the human doppelganger. Borrowing from classical and antique ideals of beauty, De Andrea transposes individual features to modern times with scrupulous precision, while his dedication to socially critical themes is also expressed in his work "American Icons - Kent State University".
