Italian sculptor Fabio Viale reinterprets the role of marble as a medium in contemporary society. Working with a classical material, marble, he stands out as a true master of his craft. Despite working with marble in a very traditional way, his sculptures are anything but ordinary. He is known for visually transforming the noble material into non-standard materials such as styrofoam, paper, plastic and wood, expressing a delicacy and lightness that is unimaginable from the bulky material. This allows him to create perfect illusions, tricking people's perceptions by depicting everyday objects in a realistic manner, like trompe l'oeil. Viale's work is characterized by art historical references and ancient masterpieces. By creating copies of antique sculptures and unfamiliarizing their surfaces, Viale challenges the viewer to confront the altered copies and recognize their materiality in a contemporary context.
