Duane Hanson

USA

Born in 1925, died in 1996. Hanson began working as early as the 1960s on life-size human sculptures, cast from live models in fiberglass and polyester resin. Using real clothing, wigs and other accessories, he created the illusion of everyday life. He first presented his hyperrealistic sculptures to a large audience at Documenta 5 in Kassel in 1972. From the very beginning, Hanson chose to focus on questions of social identity. Later, from the 1960s onwards, his work increasingly focused on the representation of working-class and marginalised people. The fact that his works are fabricated and therefore narrative gives life to the doppelganger (self-vision illusion), which in turn poses direct questions to the viewer about the nature of the human condition (conditio humana).
