On Friday, January 17th and Saturday, January 18th, Study: Osaka Kansai International Art Festival exhibited a workshop booth at the Matsuba Lantern Festival, which was held at Seven Park Tenbi in Matsubara City!

As soon as we opened, many people, mainly parents and children, came to our workshop booth.

At the Study: Osaka Kansai International Art Festival Workshop booth, participants were given the opportunity to choose their favorite piece of wood from a wide variety of shapes and sizes and create their own work of art!
This time, we also used scrap skateboards provided by the Sakuraya Matsubara School Uniform Reuse Shop, which is working on the "NEXT STEP OLLIE" project*. The colorful designs of the scrap skateboards make them very popular with children.

They filed the wood, enjoying the different textures, and glued pieces together freely with glue. Staff helped with the more difficult tasks of drilling nails and making holes. A wide variety of children gathered, from those with a clear idea of what they wanted to make, to those who just wanted to try, to those who were curious about wood. There was even an adult among them who said, "I've recently started keeping birds..." They all worked silently, without being distracted by anything, making them look like craftsmen.

They created a skateboard filing stand that takes advantage of the roughness of skateboard deck tape and can be used as a file.
The finished products were all different for each participant, from a child who made a small skateboard out of scrap skateboard material, to a child who combined many pieces of wood to make something like a large boat, to a child who made something like a bird with magnificent wings. Every child worked really hard, and even in the cold weather, the booth was filled with enthusiasm.

The main event was the launch of Sky Lanterns® in the evening! The Matsubara Lantern Festival was held as part of the Matsubara City 70th Anniversary Commemoration Project, and what made it so appealing was that it was environmentally friendly and made sure that absolutely no lanterns were wasted. Each lantern had each family's wishes and goals for the year written on it, and the sight of the Sky Lanterns® gently lighting up the night sky was truly beautiful.

We were able to complete the workshop without any problems, thanks to the support of all the staff members. Thank you very much to everyone who came to the event!

The Matsuba Lantern Festival is scheduled to be held after April.

About the "NEXT STEP OLLIE" project
"NEXT STEP OLLIE" is a project to support single-parent families who are prone to experience disparities due to economic reasons, etc.
We will create and sell upcycled items from broken skateboards, and generate new value from the profits from sales to support single-parent families. Like the skateboarding trick "Ollie," we will overcome social issues and pave the way for the future of the next generation.
